FAVORITE NEIL YOUNG ALBUM FOLKS?

Mine's "After The Gold Rush" with "Tonight's the Night" at a close second.

After the Gold Rush just has such a good set of songs. I really don't think there's a week song on that album. Every single song could be a single. Although there are better versions of "Birds" out there, particually on Neil Young acrhives.

OH and new live disc coming out June 12th! It's going to be his early 80's stuff. I'm so pumped for it!

  9. Alright, I've got a confession to make. I don't care for "Tonight's the Night." Individually, there are songs on there I love, but all together, that drunken sloppiness just doesn't blow me away. As a young Neil Young fan around 2009 when I was just getting into his early music, I had heard of how weird and dark "Tonight's the Night" was, and as many people who know me know, I love weird and dark music. But upon hearing that album, I was...underwhelmed. I spent summer nights listening to that album hoping that it would click for me, but it never did. Same thing happened to me with "The Wall," when I was just getting into Pink Floyd. As a favorite Neil Young album, I guess I'd have to say "Time Fades Away." It just flows so well, and there isn't one song on there that I don't love. I even like "Time Fades Away," which isn't usually the kind of song I like. The music is angry and dark in some points, and really calm and nice at other times. One of the greatest albums I've heard. Strangely though, Neil, who is my all time favorite songwriter, doesn't like it, and yet he claims that "Tonight's the Night" is his best record. I guess the two of us just have different tastes in Neil Young music.

  10. I completely agree with you about "Times Fades Away", it really is one of my favorite albums, I just always seem to forget about mentioning it. I think he's crazy for not liking "Time Fades Away", but "Tonight's the Night" is just brilliant for me. The piano at the beginning is one of the most haunted things I've ever heard. And the album flows better after "World On A String".

  13. I'd have to say Tonight's the Night is my favorite, based on what I've heard so far of Neil's work. I'm expecting "Greendale" will rival it once I've given it 20 or more listens. My favorite half of an album, though, would have to be the second side of "On the Beach." That's just pure musical bliss. In the history of rock music, IMO, there's no better trio of back-to-back-to-back songs than "On the Beach," "Motion Pictures" and "Ambulance Blues."
